“Design Workshop – Design for 2012” – Calling all yearbook and newspaper staff designers! This workshop will challenge you and push your design perspective for your readers’ digital needs. Take a look at design as a whole to better connect the story from print to web. Day one, all campers will decide on overall attitude for their publication and how that translates to design elements throughout. Media Now STL design campers walk away with cover/front page and spread design and their own set of web infused icons.

“Editor Workshop – Leading a digital newsroom” – We’re bringing you the good stuff with this new course offering on how to run that growing and changing digital newsroom. Plug into this editor/leader development track and gain skills to manage a digital newsroom with exposure to new tools and web extensions for their sites or printed publications to infuse the news and information coverage and flow. Leave with a knowledge and structure for your own newsroom along with at least two practical and applicable digital media elements to implement for the upcoming school year.

“Multimedia Workshop – Broadcast/video in 2012” – Pump up your video shooting, editing and storytelling skills with a hands-on, get it done, boot camp using the equipment already in your backpack. Get the chance to tell a story with the camera and editing software available them at your school – and sometimes that may mean your cell phone. Tell a compelling story through your pictures. Whether they’re moving or still, combine them with audio from an interview to take the reader on location with you. Leave the camp with a multimedia story to share and skills to do it again for your publications that school year.

“Digital Photography Workshop – From still photos to multimedia story” – That’s right, we’ve added a new track all for our photogs. The photo track will provide intense focus on composition for news and feature photography, how to build a story using images and work as a team on an assignment. When you leave out of this Media Now boot camp you’ll be confident in capturing that feature photo, understand how to successfully work team coverage from the field to compiling the gallery and how to tell a compelling photo story.

“Web: Introductory Workshop” – In this basic web course, you’ll will create a Web site from scratch (using WordPress), build upon a basic site you’ve already started and learn how to manage the content and maintenance of a full news web site. set-ups and customization to get your site up and running for the upcoming school year.

“Web: Advanced Workshop” – Bring it. You’ve been up and running for a year or so, but are ready to kick it up a notch, challenging yourself while bringing your readers more of what they want. This bootcamp will give your site and your skills a boost. Look at how to adjust basic HTML code, customize and add elements to your site to enhance usability. Infuse social media elements and gain skills to further maintain control of this ever changing site and digital newsroom.

Aaron is in his 26th year of advising student media. He is currently the Director of Student Media at Francis Howell North High School in St. Charles, Missouri. He is the Journalism Education Association Digital Media Chair and co-Director of Media Now. He is the 2023 JEA Teacher Inspiration Award Winner and is a former Dow Jones News Fund National Journalism Teacher of the Year.
