Creative Commons is an important tool for copyright and fair use

Teaching copyright and fair use to journalism students is part and parcel of the work we do as advisers.

Creative Commons is a useful tool for communicating and creating what rights an owner allows a user.  This simple tool empowers both the owner (which is sometimes advisers and student journalists) and the user (which is sometimes advisers and student journalists).

As a teacher who runs a student news website and creates on-line course materials, I’ve created the following checklist to help me in times of question.

As a journalism adviser, I need to teach my students their options as well, as many of them are docilely adding content without considering what rights they have over things they create.
